Many farmers across the region are waiting for frost a killing frost that will allow them to begin harvesting late-season crops such as corn.

But some other farmers are thankful the frosty weather has stayed away so far the farmers who've been busy lifting sugar beets from their soil in the past week.

The frantic sugar beet harvest is about at its mid-point in the Mon-Dak region a fact evident in the heavy truck traffic along the main highway from Williston to Fairview these days.

At what's called the Sugar Valley receiving center near Fairview, thousands of tons of sugar beets have been piled up since harvest began a week ago.

And the lack of frost means the sugar content of the beets has been improving.

An official with Sidney Sugars says it's shaping up to be a great crop this year.

(Steve Meier, Sidney Sugars) "It is, it's a very excellent crop. The growers are doing an excellent job on harvest. We've got really nice harvest weather so far, we've had some rain earlier."

We'll show you much more off the sugar beet harvest as part of our Eye on Agriculture tomorrow.
